CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — A one-time tourism program aims to boost overnight stays and visitor spending in the Charlottesville area.

On Friday, the Charlottesville Albemarle Convention and Visitors Bureau announced the tourism event sponsorship program.

According to a press release, it aims to boost visitor stays and spending through tourism and even sponsorship and outreach from the CACVB.

This program aims to provide sponsorship funds as tourism events return, bolstering marketing dollars to help increase visitor spending, revenue and jobs.

Applicants to this program must demonstrate their ability to execute the proposed event through an event planner or staff, and approved events must take place by June 30, 2023.

The release says this program is open to any event that will generate overnight visits, where visitors will spend more than one day in an area, Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

The CACVB says it no longer has a signature event program and that these funds are provided on an ad hoc basis.

There will be two winter events selected to receive $25,000 each, one in the city and one in the county.

These events will be selected in part based on their ability to have the greatest impact on winter overnight stays.

All other sponsorships will receive up to $20,000 and will be selected based on several factors including tourism impact, marketing plan, ability to execute and competitive application.

Applications for this program are due by August 1 and event sponsorships will be awarded by August 15.

All funds awarded must be used to market and advertise to potential visitors within a 50+ mile radius of Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

The release says ad locations will need to be indicated in advance and that proof of advertising must be submitted with the final event report.

Additionally, up to 25% of grant funding may be used to create promotional material, as long as it also includes the current CACVB logo.
