Need more funding for research: Head of IIT Delhi


Hyderabad: In a historic first, the University of Osmania presented the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Research Excellence by faculty members here Monday at the Tagore Auditorium on the OU campus.

The laureates were: Dr V Srilatha (political science); Dr Bheem Bhukya (Microbiology); Dr KCHE VIdyasagar (biomedical engineering) and Dr Harish Gupta (geology). J Raju, an alumnus of Osmania University donated funds for the award.

Professor V Ramgopal Rao, Director of IIT Delhi, who was the main guest, congratulated the alumni for sponsoring the research award. He stressed that research is crucial and called for more research funding in the country.

“Research leads to the creation of knowledge which in turn creates wealth by encouraging technology start-ups. Additionally, innovation is possible when faculty members are encouraged to engage in research,” he observed, Professor D Ravinder, OU Vice-Chancellor, traced the genesis of the idea for the Vice-Chancellor’s Research Prize and said that it is crucial that those involved in research and development obtain the recognition it deserves.

He said OU had produced “leaders” in various fields and not “followers” and urged members to strive to improve the reputation of the university and change the misperceptions of the public. Professor R Limbadri, President of TSCHE and guest of honor, appreciated the idea of ​​rewarding researchers from the university who will boost the morale of others and contribute to society. OU Registrar, stressed the importance of research in universities and the institution of the Vice-Chancellor’s Award to recognize the research talent of the university. Deans, principals, principals, heads of departments, study group chairs, guest alumni and faculty members attended the event.
