ELKINS — More than $114,909 in federal funding to local organizations was announced Monday by Tygart Valley United Way.
The announcement listed $87,531 in ARPA-R funding and $27,378 in Phase 39 Emergency Food and Shelter Program funding to a total of 16 nonprofits in the Tygart Valley area.
Randolph County recipients include Meals on Wheels of Randolph County, Elkins United Christian Community Center, Highland Community Builders and Catholic Charities.
Tucker County recipients include the Blackwater Ministerial Association.
“The Emergency Food and Shelter Program is a federal government program that is another opportunity for nonprofits to get additional funding for meals served, other food, services for the -shelter and accommodation nights if they meet the guidelines required for funding,” Joseph Solberg, director of finance and grants at TVUW and chair of the EFSP board, said. “United Way is proud to be leading this process to bring dollars to our community.
A local board separate from the FGPS prioritizes funding based on current needs and eligible program activities before selecting which agencies to fund. Local boards should review the resources available in the community, the emergency food and shelter needs of the community, the service gaps in the community and focus funds to meet those needs in the areas of food and emergency shelters.
Priorities may vary from year to year, so each award phase is assessed individually. Once the priorities have been established, the local board reviews the proposals and selects the organizations to be funded to help meet the identified needs.
The local council is asking applying agencies to leverage partnerships, funding and prevention solutions to complement the immediate relief provided by the Emergency Food and Shelter Grants.
Other grant recipients for this funding round include, in Marion County, Reset Incorporated, Soup Opera, Connecting Link, HOPE, Inc., Giver’s Hand Food Pantry, and NCWV Community Action; and in Taylor County, NCWV Community Action, Bread of Life Mission and Taylor County Family Resources.
The Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) was established in 1983 to complement and expand the work of local social service, non-profit and government agencies to help people in dire straits. economic emergency (not related to a disaster).
EFSF funds can be used to provide long-term economic assistance, even though current circumstances may have been affected by a previous disaster. EFSP funding is open to all nonprofit 501(c)(3), faith-based, and government organizations that help hungry and homeless people.
