Horn’s Legislation Recommends Project Funding at State Universities and Community Colleges

LANSING, Michigan— The Senate Appropriations Committee on Wednesday approved a bill sponsored by State Senator Ken Horn to advance a number of capital improvement projects at numerous public universities, community colleges and other state institutions around the Michigan.

“As chairman of the Senate Committee on Economic Development and Small Business, I have carefully considered our needs when it comes to keeping Michigan competitive. Each of these projects will help position Michigan’s higher education institutions to thrive in the future,” said Horn, R-Frankenmuth. “An important part of attracting and retaining talent is inspiring students and faculty to create new careers and live here in this state. This investment brings us one step closer to accomplishing my goal of growing our state by one million people within 10 years, which I call the “1MP Project.”

Senate Bill 78 provides planning permission for projects at 12 universities and 18 community colleges. Improvements range from renovations and additions to existing buildings to the construction of new high-tech learning centers to help provide Michigan students with better learning opportunities.

“These investments will reach every corner of the state and meet our most critical workforce needs,” Horn said. “We have engineering and aviation facilities at Eastern Michigan University, health science additions at Ferris State University, criminal justice and fire training facilities at Lake Superior State University, a renovated science complex at Oakland University, renovated science and computer labs at Saginaw Valley State University. , a new space for skilled trades programs at community colleges in Kirtland and Oakland, and nursing and health technology spaces at community colleges in Monroe and North Central – to name a few. -ones.

SB 78 also includes authorization for construction projects to ensure that the state’s veterans receive the care they deserve. The bill provides for upgrades to DJ Jacobetti’s veterans home in Marquette and will establish much-needed new veterans homes in Detroit and southern Michigan. In addition to these homes, the bill also provides funding for necessary upgrades to Michigan State Trooper training facilities.

The bill is now before the full Senate for consideration.
