Disappointed with commissioners threatening YWCA program funding due to political views [letter] | Letters to the Editor

As a constituent of Lancaster County Commissioners Josh Parsons and Ray D’Agostino, I am disappointed — but not surprised — by their statements last week about YWCA Lancaster’s political views and county funding of the program. YWCA Lancaster Parent Empowerment. (On Wednesday, the funding was approved by a 2-1 vote, with Parsons voting against.)

If these officials had a true understanding of American history, they would understand that supporting ballot access is well within the “track” of the YWCA. And there’s no doubt that many Lancaster County citizens would be worse off without access to the programs and services of this nonprofit, which, according to its 2019-2020 annual report, costs twice the amount of funding. provided by government sources.

I believe that shouting “election security” at a single ballot box is part of Republicans’ playbook for stoking political division and distracting from the real voting problems they refuse to address or choose to actively escalate.

Perhaps our commissioners and legislators could find ways to make voting more accessible, regardless of party affiliation; ensure that electoral constituencies are drawn fairly; or to reduce the amount of obscene money that is poured into political campaigns. We will see.
