ASG senators approve additional funding for some student groups

The Associated Student Government Senate voted to approve additional funding for certain student groups on Wednesday after hearing the requests.

ASG Student Activities Finance Committee allocated funds to student groups based on this week’s proposals. At Wednesday’s meeting, group representatives reviewed their allocated SAFC funding and came before the Senate to request additional grants.

Of the remaining $45,000 in available funds, the Senate voted to spend over $17,000, approving additional funding for Fusion Dance Company, For Members Only, Purple Crayon Players, Northwestern Political Union, Middle Eastern North African Student Association, Outdoors Club and UNITY Charity Fashion Show.

Fusion asked for money to attend the Prelude Midwest dance competition. After participating this year, Fusion representative Matthew Lee said the group wanted to make participating in the competition more accessible for members.

“We want to be able to make this experience an experience that they don’t have to worry about in terms of the financial aspects,” Lee said. “This year we ate the majority of our costume costs…but we had to ask our members to pay their own competition costs, which prevented some of our members (from competing).”

Due to time constraints, an additional round of proposals will be heard at next week’s meeting for the remaining over $20,000. Funds remaining after this meeting will be put towards Fall Term Funding Allocations.

Senators originally voted to fund an additional $5,600 for the NU Dance Marathon, but cut funding after some senators raised questions about whether NUDM raises funds to cover internal production costs. ASG funding is meant to exist as a last resort, those senators said.

“An organization as big as NUDM can easily get a donor to donate, and I think it’s very unfair that a very established organization like NUDM is asking for that money,” said Greek Multicultural Council Senator Javier Cuadra. “I don’t feel comfortable giving more money.”
