The Accomack County Board of Supervisors voted Wednesday to approve an application by the Eastern Shore Coalition Against Domestic Violence for ARPA funding of $250,000 to be used to complete construction of two buildings at the former GF Horne complex in Onancock. .

Speaking on behalf of ESCADV, Past President Peaches Dodge updated the Board on the status of the project to date. Dodge said that of the $1.7 million needed to rehabilitate the three buildings, about $650,000 was raised through individual and corporate donations, state and federal grants, and the sale of the offices. existing ones and the duplex that housed the customers. Dodge said local individuals and groups donated 1,800 hours to help with the project.

She also added that some of these funds won’t be available until 2023, and the organization badly needs county input in order to continue construction and operate the site later this year.

Dodge said when accommodations are ready, customers can be moved from motels to the facility, reducing expenses.

Supervisor Jackie Phillips said he was proud of the work that has been done to make this a reality and congratulated Dodge and ESCADV for the progress they have made so far. Phillips also said “the county needs to be a part of that as well.”

The motion was presented and passed unanimously to dedicate the full amount requested for ARPA funding to the project.
